Experimental Investigation on Organic Matter Orientation Characteristics of Terrestrial and Marine Shale in China

As an essential component in shale, OM (organic matter) grains and their arrangements may play roles affecting the anisotropy of reservoir. However, are commonly treated as evenly distributed isotropic medium current studies, few works have been done to investigate detailed arrangement characteristics. In this study, terrestrial marine shale samples were collected from three different plays China, characteristics each sample investigated by SEM (scanning electron microscope) image analysis. The results indicate that not medium, directional alignment is pervasive both shale. tend subparallel bedding section, orientation degree controlling factors differ among shales. C-7(Chang-7 Formation) exhibit strongest directionality arrangement, LMX (Longmaxi Fuling area also strong alignment. While Baojing area, much weaker. Shales with high clay content, TOC (total organic carbon), low thermal maturity, flat reservoir structure get more parallel section. biogenetic texture graptolite dominating factor leading grains. syncline disorganize preformed weaken grains, which difference between Baojing. compaction layered particles mechanism C-7.
